Love Stories by Nichola Kinch

When I first walked in the art gallery, I saw a copy of a tree hanging around the room and a small little machine that had different moon phases on it. I was confused. I had no idea what all it meant and what meaning it was portraying. The trees were made out of a thin piece of paper and the machine looked hand built. After being in the gallery for a few minutes, I started to feel calm and had a soft feeling, like I was in a woods on a warm night.

The artist started the talk with how each item worked with the others. She explained that the trees would disappear based on where the person was standing and focused a lot on perspective and how it affected the piece. Although her talk helped me put the puzzle pieces together, I don’t think listening to her talk was beneficial to me. That is because I had enjoyed the original feeling that I was receiving from the display.

Fair Use or Copyright?

During the 2008 elections, Mannie Garcia of the AP took an inspiring photo of the soon to be president, Barack Obama. A little while after this iconic photo was taken, a young street artist, Shepard Fairey, borrowed the image to base a poster off of, that included Obama's signature word "Hope." Once the AP found out about this, they took Fairey to court, accusing the artist of Copyright Violation. Fairey responded with the defense of Fair Use.

In my opinion, Fairey did not violate any laws, and had the right to interpret the photo because of Fair Use. A memorable example of this happening in past years, was when an artist used a portion of an advertisement in his art work, he won the case under Fair Use. Another important case for going for Fairey, is the dispute between a book publisher and Time Inc. The book publisher used stills from the assassination of JFK, the stills were from Time Inc, but the judge ruled with the Publisher, because it was a historical event, which is similar to the picture of Barack Obama. All in all, I believe that Fairey had every right to use this image.

Conveying Emotions : Derek Shell

Black and Blue Exhibition

I thought this was an interesting exhibition. It was confusing to me at first, but after I read about it, it made more sense. The exhibition makes me think about how schools treat students and how some kids may be left out or forced to be left out. The artist was an awesome guy, he gave a great description. He talked about how race changed how kids are treated during school. All in all I thought it was a rather confusing exhibition, without Jared there.
